Tanks Arts Centre
Tank 4 - Visual Arts
Tanks Arts Centre is a business unit of Cairns Regional Council, in the Community, Sports & Cultural Division.
Situated in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, just 4km north of the city’s CBD, the centre is an iconic and innovative, multi-use, contemporary arts facility creatively housed in three converted World War 2 naval oil storage tanks, and set amidst a lush rainforest backdrop.
Tanks combines two main functions, that of a ‘presenter’ organisation offering a range of arts and cultural events and activities to a mixed audience, and a community cultural development organisation which aims to proactively engage local communities in cultural expression and participation.
Tanks Arts Centre hosts a variety of local and touring exhibitions, artists´ residencies and studio activity. Tanks main exhibition space, Tank 4, is unlike a conventional, white-wall gallery and offers a unique environment in which to create and present work.
Our Visual Arts Program welcomes initiatives by artists and community groups to develop projects that utilise the venue in innovative and interesting ways, particularly through collaborations and partnerships.
The gallery is a multi-functional exhibition and performance space, catering for all art forms. These spaces are available for hire to individual artists and art organisations and possess a unique setting, size, shape and durability to accommodate exhibitions and performances.
Opening times are Monday to Friday (9:30am – 4:30pm)
NOTE: Opening times can vary with some exhibitions open during weekends. Please check the Program for exact opening times of our current shows.
