Does your organisation offer grants for artists and opportunities such as scholarships, residencies, art contests, travel, public commissions, business assistance, photography contests, jobs or exhibitions?
Artists are often on the look-out for grants or scholarships to assist them to complete a course of study or a particular project. A variety of government or philanthropic grants or long or short term residencies are often attractive to them as these broaden their experience and can offer research as well as networking opportunities. Frequently art internships may be in another country, in which case the artist may bring valuable insights to his or her host organisation.
If you do have projects such as these on offer, please provide information about them, below. It would be appreciated if you could make your submission at least 400 words in length. This website service is provided free of charge.
Holiday resorts in North Queensland often value an
artist-in-residence programme, whereby an artist may live in the resort
for a month or longer, working, demonstrating and chatting to guests,
who are also able to purchase work.
When my family and I owned
Mowbray Gallery and Port Douglas Gallery of Fine Art we ran art
internships for artists from other parts of Australia. It was quite a
select project as we needed to accept only artists whose work was of a
very high standard. More than that, they needed to be comfortable
working in front of the public - and often talking at the same time!
We
ran the programme for eight years, averaging about ten artists every
year. The benefits to artists were considerable. Many of them had not
met purchasers of their work before as most of them normally sold work
through the gallery system. So it was quite a thrill when someone bought
their work and they could see how much the purchaser enjoyed it.
Most
visiting artists established friendships with artists (and buyers) from
the North Queensland region, many of which endure a decade later. The
local art lovers, of course, looked forward to meeting new artists every
month.
Not all artists are happy to accept commissions but many
are so please let us have your ideas if you are thinking about engaging
an artist for a particular purpose.
Of course, if you are part of a philanthropic, government or
private organisation which can offer grants for artists to develop their
careers, I am sure that artists would be delighted to hear about it!
If so, please tell us about them here.
