In Far North Queensland, the world of books and visual arts meet in a cross-venue exhibition event in celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day.

4TH ANNUAL WOMEN IN THE ARTS 2014
The Women in the Arts exhibition event is an annual program run by Queensland-based ARI, Knock Knock Contemporary Artists’ Initiative. This year’s program includes an exhibition of new major works from Far North Queensland contemporary artists; an exhibition of artist books; artist book workshops and a High Tea for International Women’s Day with guest speakers from literary and visual arts fields.

WOMEN IN THE ARTS: OF SENSE & SENSIBILITIES

A major works exhibition at Canopy Arts Centre in Cairns shines the spotlight on Far North Queensland professional arts practice. A major showcase of new work by 16 professional artists from the region, highlights new directions for many participants, including painting, sculpture, engraving, print-making, ceramics, silver smithing and installation.

Of Sense & Sensibilities, curated by Louisa Ennis-Thomas, follows the literary thread running through this year’s events. Artists reflect upon their outside influences, with a book from each artist’s personal collection accompanying their major work in the exhibition. The show will be on display from Wednesday 19 February until 10 March.

‘Sense & Sensibilities showcases some of our region’s best-known visual artists as well as a sneak peek at up-coming new talent. Each year the event encourages the development of a selection of early career artists from within our community’, says curator, Louisa Ennis-Thomas

The official opening for the combined Women in the Arts exhibition events will take place at Canopy Art Centre from 6pm Friday 7 March in anticipation of the celebrations for International Women’s Day.
