The Bruce Downie Collection - Tanks Arts Centre
Exhibition 9 October – 13 November
The photographs and memories of No. 25 Operational Base Unit by 147586 LAC Downie B.G. W/T
Bruce Downie enlisted in the RAAF on his 18th birthday in February 1944 and trained as a wireless telegraphist. By the end of the year, he’d been posted to Cairns, where he was stationed for a year and a half. Here, he saw the end of WWII, he made friends, he went to the cinema, he listened to music and he took photographs.
Sixty five years later, Bruce Downie has donated all his photographs of Cairns, along with fascinating anecdotes and trivia to the Tanks Arts Centre. The collection is a young man’s portrait of a country town, during a time of war, a time of celebration and a time of joyful peace.
