Thapich Dr Gloria Fletcher Bursary Fundraiser

by Jan Aird
(Cairns Queensland)

Thapich Dr Gloria Fletcher AO generously left some funds in her will to set up a bursary, as it was her wish to support emerging young Aboriginal artists and aspiring young Aboriginal arts workers from the Western Cape York Peninsula.

It has been a year since her sad passing, and during this time a committee has been set up to drive the Western Cape Aboriginal Youth Art Bursary. The bursary honours the memory, achievements and legacy of Thapich, who was the first Aboriginal artist with tertiary qualifications in art.

The funds Thapich bequeathed to the bursary are modest and the committee has worked to raise further monies to create a bursary that we hope can be viable and perpetual.

Available for auction on the night are artworks created by Thapich and other highly esteemed artists throughout the state including Judy Watson, Sam Tupou, Kristen Tennyson, Brian Robinson and Arone Meeks.

Please join us to honour Thapich’s wish to create a bursary that will provide long lasting benefits to emerging young Aboriginal artists from the Western Cape York Peninsula.

Members of the Thaynak family and friends of Thapich Gloria Fletcher AM, together with The Western Cape Aboriginal Youth Art Bursary committee look forward to sharing a successful evening with you on Thursday May 17 at 6pm at KickArts Contemporary Arts, 96 Abbott Street Cairns.

Cash donations, which are tax deductible, are also gratefully appreciated and can be made to the Aboriginal Benefits Foundation. Please contact the treasurer Simon Chan on mobile: 0411 138 308.
