Sting in the Tail
Kick Arts Gallery One July 28 – September 12

Djumbunji Press KickArts Fine Art Printmaking was launched in early 2009. The Studio is located just north of the city in the Cairns Cultural Precinct near the Botanical Gardens.

‘Djumbunji’ is a traditional word of the Gimuy Yidinji people, which means ‘belongs to scorpion place’ and honours the location of the printmaking studio in the area of Bunda Djumbunji (Scorpion Mountain), the traditional name for the Whitfield Mountain Range.

Housed in a building that is generously supported by James Cook University the studio is equipped to offer a full range of printmaking services.

Djumbunji Press provides major cultural infrastructure for Cairns and artists across Far North Queensland and has been made possible by the Queensland Government through its backing Indigenous Arts Program.

In celebration of this major cultural infrastructure for the artists of Cairns and Far North Queensland, KickArts presents a collection of fine art prints created by artists collaborating with the new printmaking studio.

These limited edition prints from some of the region’s leading and emerging artists have been published by Djumbunji Press and present the wealth of talent from this remote part of Australia.

Sting in the Tail is a selection of framed recent works on paper by over 20 Far North Queensland contemporary artists, produced as part of an initial series of workshops through Djumbunji Press in the first half of 2009. Artists worked to create intaglio plates with Djumbunji Press printmaker Dian Darmansjah during workshops that were conducted both in the Cairns based studio and in the field at the Indigenous community of Yarrabah and at the Weipa Arts Hub.

This collection of multi-coloured etchings explores the artists’ connection to the environment and their history within it. Sting in the Tail reflects the great diversity of forms of expression that is present in the vibrant Tropical North Queensland arts community.
Sting in the Tail is currently exhibiting in Gallery One at KickArts and runs through to September 12.

Please join us on August 22 at 12.00 midday when Judge Sarah Bradley will officially open the exhibition.
Entry is free and everybody is welcome.
