Paper

'Cumulus' Belinda Smith

Krista Berga, Susan Buret, Julie Dimitrijevski, Rosie Miller, Pamela See and Belinda Smith are 6 contemporary artists who come together to present ‘Paper’ an exhibition in Kick Arts Gallery Two that focuses on works that explore the manipulation and materiality of paper.

“There’s something uncannily open about Krista Berga’s palpable and in fact electrifying work, something frank and disarming, bordering on the unguarded.

‘A salut without return’ as Derrida puts it, a gesture of self expression and mortal vulnerability, made without knowing how it will be received but made just the same, as if in insistent wager, of one risking exposure to the other”, David L. Clarke says of Krista’s work.

Susan Buret’s works of art look at two often opposing ideas of domestic security – the ideas of home, the safe haven we make unique with furnishings and patterns we apply to walls and floors and, the idea of national domestic security where our borders are protected by the rigorous enforcement of rules governing conditions of entry.

As a first generation Australian Macedonian, Julie Dimitrijevski seeks to explore identity and culture through her work. She is particularly interested in the symbol of the tree that is commonly used in Macedonian embroidery patterns. Ornamental motifs found in these patterns such as trees, roots and animals form a basis for her image making.

Cut, shaved, folded and buffed, Rosie Miller’s books are multiples made unique. After varied lives these altered objects now exist somewhere between pulp and bookcase and have been extended into a new life where text resembles sediment, and the grain of reading is revealed.

Pamela See considers the idea of life itself unfolding through her artwork that is about the struggle for people to realise their potential in life with the infringement of the will of others. Inadvertently, sometimes when one person’s life unfolds it can impact another’s.

Belinda Smith presents ‘Cumulus’ which describes a process, a sculptural form and an expression of experiences. It is an exploration of how simple shapes build upon each other to create a complex and unpredictable form. Paper discs are pieced together by sewing, forming a floral motif. By repeating this process a form develops becoming a structure that is more akin with organic matter or cloud formations.

‘Paper’ is on exhibition at KickArts in Gallery Two from November 13 to February 20, 2010. Opening celebrations take place on December 4 commencing at 6.00pm. Everybody is welcome and entry is free.

Rosie Miller, Pamela See and Julie Dimitrijevski will also hold workshops at KickArts in conjunction with the ‘Paper’ exhibition. Rosie Miller will present a workshop on book sculpture on Saturday November 21, Pamela See will present a workshop on paper cutting for children and adults on Saturday December 5 and Julie Dimitrijevski will present a workshop on folded artist books on Saturday December 12.

Places are limited for each class so the sooner you book in the better. We hope you enjoy this series of workshops based around the ‘Paper’ exhibition. For workshop enquiries please call 4050 9496 or email samantha@kickarts.org.au
