Onions - classic oil painting techniques

by Delmus G. Phelps
(Lynchburg Virginia, USA)

Onions still life

Onions still life

This was a commissioned work in which the client wanted onions with a dark background. Similar to a previous purchase of bell papers. This was done in the 7 layer Flemish technique that I use. Sorry I don't have any tropical examples yet, but I do have some orchids I'll be doing soon to post if you'd like.

Tasty
by: Ted E.

Looking at this painting with such realism. I have a watery mouth just staring at the painting. I can visualize them as being ready for my steak, my hamburger or hot dog. Even atop my schnitzel.

All this and now I have to scrounge for something to eat. This has been such an inspiration.

Thanks for sharing.

Classic!

Delmus, I love your painting of onions. Who would think that such an "ordinary" subject could look so stunning. The colours (therefore tones) that you have used are so harmonious, yet exciting.

It is a little unusual these days to see artists using such classic oil painting techniques - well done and thank you for sharing.
