Off Shoots - Julie McEnerny Residency and Exhibition
Official Launch Friday July 10, 6pm
Exhibition Dates 3 July – 18 July
This impressive exhibition is the culmination of months of work onsite at Tanks Arts Centre and the Cairns Botanic Gardens.
Full time artist and illustrator Julie McEnerny is active in the local arts community and exhibits regularly in various groups and solo shows.
She’s been an ‘artist in residence’ at Tanks and the Cairns Botanic Gardens since mid-May, working on the beginnings of a ‘florilegium’ – recording plants of the Gardens.
She’s created a series of works relating to the Aboriginal Plant Use Garden, incorporating etchings printed at Djumbunji Press and KickArts Fine Art Printmaking, plus drawings, paintings and some exploratory three-dimensional pieces.
This residency has given Julie access to Traditional Owners’ knowledge, Cairns Botanic Gardens’ staff and Friends of the Botanic Gardens’ library collection, allowing her to father accurate information.
Her work has taken botanical illustration along the road of artistic interpretation, in an effort to achieve the Garden’s collection in a unique and interesting way.
While this small exhibition is a culmination of her residency, it is only the beginning of a much larger body of work. As a regular Flying Arts tutor, Julie is also offering a weekend workshop at Tanks Arts Centre and Cairns Botanic Gardens for beginners to intermediate artists.
