Read Famous Australian Artists' Quotes; Contribute Your Favourites?

Every so often I need to use famous Australian artists' quotes and I thought that you might, too.

Whether writing an essay or just making a point to a friend, it can be useful to be able to show how great minds have perceived the world, something of their philosophy of life and what has motivated them in the making of their art.

So I have started a collection of artists quotes and I wondered if you would like to help me to compile a more comprehensive list?

Those on this next page all "resonated" with me (particularly Gauguin's - excuse the pun!) when I first read them and have guided my thoughts and attitudes about art and life for many years. Some are my favourites.

What are yours?

Maybe we could arrange them in time periods, or from different countries.

In my list of famous artists quotes on the next page, the French Impressionists get a good "look-in". So what if we started with those from other countries?

Wouldn't it be great if we could compile a comprehensive list of Australian artists quotes? Or narrow it down to famous Australian artists who lived and worked in tropical North Queensland for a period - artists such as Donald Friend, Ian Fairweather or Ray Crooke, who still lives in Cairns.

A few famous Australian artists quotes to start you off -

William Dobell: "A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something which is, in itself, a living thing."

Ken Done: "Wherever you are in the world, there's always something about the Australian light. There's something about the sharpness of it, something about the clarity of it, something about the colours of Australia. And, hopefully, something optimistic about Australian painting too."

Tim Storrier: "I'm very sceptical of art criticism pro and con."

Fred Williams: "I see things in terms of paint, all else is irrelevant."

John Olsen: "Painting is a means of self-enlightenment."

Arthur Boyd: "Art doesn't alter things. It points things out, but it doesn't alter them. It can't, no matter what a painter wants to do."

Margaret Olley: "As you get older, you move to a point where you can give back to society.

...over to you?
