Destination Daintree Art Prize

Entries in the Destination Daintree Art Prize 2012 are now open.

The inaugural art competition is being run by Douglas Arts Base, a Mossman based non-profit arts association that promotes visual arts in the Douglas region, in conjunction with Daintree Marketing Co-operative.

The Destination Daintree Art Prize offers prizes valued at $5750, with the overall winner receiving a cash prize of $2000, provided by destinationdaintree.com.

There are five category prizes, each for $500, as follows:
•Cape Trib Camping Daintree Landscapes and Seascapes Prize
•The Steve Walsh Portrait Prize sponsored by Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours
•Cape Trib Exotic Fruit Farm Daintree Flora Prize
•Exemplar Coaches and Limousines Daintree Wildlife Prize
•Heritage Lodge & Spa Daintree Photography Prize

Douglas Arts Inc President Alison Gotts has been thrilled by the enthusiasm of sponsors and artists alike. “The $2,000 main prize donated by Daintree Marketing Cooperative is a fantastic incentive to motivate artists to express on canvas what the Daintree means to them.”

The photography category has four sub categories. “Many visitors take wonderful photos which capture the essence of the Daintree – here is a chance to show your creations”.

“We are looking for images which capture the essence of the Daintree – here is an opportunity to showcase the Daintree using the creative skills of artists and photographers who have a passion for the area”.

“I encourage all professional and amateur artists and photographers from Far North Queensland who have visited the Daintree to enter the exhibition.”

Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours are sponsoring the “Daintree Characters” category, which they have named the Steve Walsh Portrait Prize in memory of Stephen Walsh who died in May 2010. “Like Jungle Surfing, this is a tribute to Steve and to the inspiration of the rainforest he loved,” said Managing Director Sheena Walshaw.

“Steve was an unforgettable and incredibly creative individual and one of the true characters of the region. His passionate belief in the Daintree and in sharing and showcasing every aspect of it was legendary and he’d be proud to be encouraging others to contribute their visions of this inspiring environment.”

Entries close 5th October 2012.

The Destination Daintree Art Prize Exhibition will be held at The Sugar Wharf in Port Douglas from 23-28 November 2012.

The Opening Event and announcement of prizes will take place on Friday 23rd November.
