North Queensland painter Tania Heben's passion.

Highly respected painter,Tania Heben, has lived and pursued her art in Port Douglas, North Queensland, for more than twenty years.

Known for her iconographic representations of life in the tropics, she has painted in Fiji as well as in Australia.

The strong colours and sheer beauty of the tropics, and especially of the Port Douglas area that she knows and loves, draw Tania back on the occasions that she may be tempted to leave.

“This area is home, rich and diverse, with inspiration all around. If I lived another lifetime I would never be able to paint it all”, she enthuses.

Tania's studio is a hive of activity, despite the slow drying time of the oil paints which she uses. Partly finished canvases stacked to dry, sketches and photographs spread out, her adoring poodle, Cricket, watching her every move, Tania paints with energy and inspiration.

The process takes over as she applies layer after layer of brilliantly coloured paint, first the wishy-washy composition, then the “lean” layers, finally the thick richness of the final touches …. and …some weeks or months later….she’s done!

Subjects vary from quaint "barracks" on sugar cane farms, to the Port Douglas Sunday Markets, children picking mangoes, old "Queenslander" cottages and flamboyant red poinciana trees in full bloom.

Many artists avoid commissions but that is not Tania’s style. As her fame has spread, the bulk of her work has become commissioned. Because her style is so distinctive, clients have a good idea of how the finished work will look. All they have to do is to select a general subject – and leave it to the expert!

To see Tania's latest paintings please see the Virtual Art Gallery on this site.

Self taught, Tania Heben has learnt well and sometimes teaches at Arthouse Port Douglas and at Cairns Regional Gallery, where students bask in her encouraging approach…and progress by leaps and bounds on their own artistic journey.
