Anna Curtis linoprints in Paradise!

Cloistered in her Mowbray Valley studio, Anna Curtis prepares her linoprints. She digs into sheets of pliable lino with sharp but primitive tools, inks up the block, positions the paper, floats her magical ball-bearing tool over the back of it and voila!

The first step in a long and concentrated process has begun.

Meticulous in her working methods and planning, it is only to be expected that the work-space of this brilliant print-maker would be highly organised.

Technically, Anna is “streets ahead” of most other print-makers, who work with lino-cuts. Using the “reduction” method of building up an image with successive layers of colours and cutting away already printed surfaces, Anna displays patience and skill, born of many years of development, to take her art form to the highest level possible.

But technique is secondary to her work and occurs as part of a process of which she is often not conscious.

The concept, the materials, the hand and eye become as one with the work, which seems to develop of its own volition, so there is always an element of surprise for her when the prints are completed.

A passionate environmentalist, Anna draws her observations and subject matter from the diversity of Nature and especially from that of the Australian tropics, where she lives.

Beautiful renderings of leaves, seedpods and flowers introduce a distant vista or reference organised, botanical collections.

Anna has kindly agreed to allow participants in the week long Artquest art tour to visit her studio and watch her demonstrate linoprinting techniques. You may even be able to "have a go" yourself or enjoy browsing through her portfolios of work for sale.
