Linda Jackson's gallery displays new work from the tropics.
Linda Jackson's gallery, on this page and inter-connecting pages, is an overview of past work but mostly showcases some of the new work completed since she moved to live in Tropical North Queensland, ten years ago.
If you would like to enquire about purchasing any of the artwork, you may contact Linda direct through the form at the bottom of the page.
Recently I was privileged to browse through some of the archived images of Linda's work over the years. What an exciting journey that was as I discovered design triggers, found in Nature, and how these ideas had been translated into the most glorious of fabric and fashion, unmistakably Australian.
The slide-show is but a tiny glimpse into that kaleidoscopic world - the work of a lifetime.
OPALINDA
Yes! That is Linda's "nickname". Her long interest in opals and their gorgeous, flashing colours led to friendships and collaborations with miners from Lightning Ridge, the home of the black opal.
Stunning opal jewellery designed by Linda and worn in conjunction with her fabulous outfits has remained a lifetime involvement.
Her relationship with Vogue Australia magazine has been on-going over the years and now they, in conjunction with Guilans, are launching Linda's
latest opal jewellery range.
NEW PAINTINGS
Since coming to live in North Queensland, Linda has been working with textiles but has also been developing her paintings, which explore the world of reef and rainforest that surround her.
Her research is very much a "hands-on" affair. Snorkelling at Low Isles, clad in a "stinger suit" with added colourful top of her own creation, she looks like a glamorous reef fish herself!
Squelching through mangrove mud in search of a red mangrove root to dye a length of silk, she soon takes on the muddy camouflage of that environment.
The vivid splash of carmine bougainvillia seen against a backdrop of dark, brooding jungle or the nodding purple heads of sugar cane in flower as far as the eye can see are all absorbed and waiting to find new life as a painting or fabulous length of silk - for you to discover in Linda Jackson's gallery!
Layers of leaves are stencilled and painted onto canvas, building up a depth that invokes the feeling of diving into a sea of foliage - Linda's garden.
This painting was, of course, inspired by the years spent in the "Red Centre" working with aboriginal artists and students. Bright colour and the rough texture of rocks and hills - even the water - make this painting a telling observation of the importance of seasonal rivers which rush noisily after inland rain.
"Desert River" acrylic on canvas $1,500
Linda has spent many days snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, from which, as you would expect, a series of works on fabric and stretched canvas developed.
TEXTILE HANGINGS
"Waratah"
This series of linen wall hangings is dyed with black wattle bark then over-printed with metallic inks. "Thanka", the large hanging above, is complemented by Waratah scrolls 1, 2 and 3, below (left to right).
